It starts with coffee
We begin as every Syracusan does: standing at the bar with a strong espresso, or the creamy “grandpa’s coffee” I grew up on. Four minutes. It tells you almost everything about how we live.
Welcome to Hidden Syracuse

Never more than 15 guests Led by me, on every single walk
The Philosophy
The real Syracuse hides in plain sight — in the quiet courtyards, the ancient stones, the hands of artisans I have known since I was a boy. This is not a tour. It is the walk I give a friend who comes to stay.
The Journey
We begin as every Syracusan does: standing at the bar with a strong espresso, or the creamy “grandpa’s coffee” I grew up on. Four minutes. It tells you almost everything about how we live.
At the market I introduce you to Francesco and the others — vendors I consider family. You taste whatever they are proudest of that morning, and hear its story from the person who made it.
Then bread, with mozzarella made that morning by a cheese-making family I call my family of the heart. We eat standing up, in the shade, the way it is meant to be eaten.
The Food
We start the tour with a strong traditional espresso or a creamy “grandpa’s coffee.” It’s not just coffee; it’s a ritual.
We visit the oldest bakery in town to taste what locals call the best arancini in Sicily. You’ll discover the family traditions behind this iconic street food.
We meet Francesco at the local market to taste Capuliato (sun-dried tomato pesto), pistachio salami, baked ricotta, and seasonal cheeses. Each product comes with a personal story.
You will enjoy the best sandwich of your life, prepared with fresh ingredients and same-day mozzarella from a local cheese-making family who I consider my “family of the heart.”
We savor traditional Sicilian sweets and pistachio cream, all handmade using ancient recipes.
Depending on the season, we enjoy the sweetest cherry tomatoes or prickly pears — two of Sicily’s most precious gifts from the land.
We conclude the experience with a refreshing granita made with seasonal fruit. My absolute personal favorite? Mulberry.
Please note: Tastings may vary slightly based on the season to guarantee the freshest local ingredients.
My Philosophy
What makes this food walk entirely different from the rest.
I work exclusively with family-owned businesses. Every baker, cheese-maker and vendor you meet is part of my extended family — authentic connections you simply cannot find on your own.
I take you where the locals eat. No headsets, no raised flags, no commercial stops. We find the hidden counters and taste family recipes passed down through generations.
I buy from local producers working by traditional methods. This walk is on foot, sourced within a few streets, and committed to preserving Sicily’s ancient culinary heritage.
Ortigia gives us so much, and I believe in giving back. By walking with me, you are directly supporting the local artisans, market vendors, and small family businesses that keep our island’s culinary heritage alive.
The Walk
The Insider
I am Dario. I have guided thousands of travelers around my island, and before anything else I am a foodie. Five months a year I travel the world hunting lost flavors — and everything I find sharpens what I show you here.
I am not taking you to look at Ortigia — I am taking you to meet it. The bakers, the vendors, the cheese-makers are my extended family, and they will greet you as mine. By the end you will know the people who fed you.
A Gift For My Guests
The walk lasts three hours, but my island is yours for the rest of your trip. At the end of our tour, every guest receives exclusive, lifetime access to my personal Hidden Syracuse App.
This is my black book. An interactive, curated map of my absolute favorite family-run restaurants, hidden artisan shops, and authentic experiences. No tourist traps, no paid recommendations — just the places where I actually eat, drink, and spend my time.

Before You Come
We will meet in front of Massimo Izzo Jewelry, located at Piazza Archimede 25, 96100 Siracusa.
Yes. Tell me in the booking form and I arrange it with each stop in advance. For allergies, let me know as early as you can so I can speak to the artisans myself and make sure every tasting is safe for you.
Yes! We can accommodate vegetarians with advance notice. Sicily has a rich tradition of vegetable-based dishes, and we’ll ensure you have equally delicious alternatives at every stop.
Families and children are absolutely welcome! Kids under 2 years old can join the food walk for free.
Ortigia is a small, flat island. Our walk lasts about 3 hours, but we move at a very leisurely pace with 7 different stops to eat, rest, and take in the local atmosphere.

I review every request myself, so that each walk stays small and the mix of guests stays right. Fill in the form below and I will come back to you personally to confirm availability.
